Indecision: President Buhari Reopens Military Checkpoints In ‘Non-Frontline States’

Barely 24 hours after ordering the closure of all military checkpoints
across the nation, President Muhammadu Buhari has yet again
ordered the reopening of the checkpoints in some parts of the
country.
This revelation was made by the Chairman of the Governor’s
Forum, Abdulazeez Yari, the Zamfara State governor.
According to Governor Yari, the President was advised to change
his stand on the matter by governors at the meeting held today,
Tuesday, June 23, 2015. They argued that the order albeit being
impromptu was also “untimely” due to the fact that some states still
faced enormous security challenges.
Governor Yari said; “But Mr. President cited some incidents that
happened at the military checkpoints but where necessary, he has
given the chief of army staff the permission that they can continue
especially in the north, south-east and the frontline states.”
The states where the counter terrorism operations are most serious
in the North-east are the frontline states.
Governor Yari further revealed that; “We discussed the issue of
frontline states as regards insurgency: Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.
The president briefed us on his meeting with the G7 countries who
have agreed to support the Nigerian government to fight the
insurgency to the last.
“Also, it was noted that the insurgency has done so much damage
to our infrastructure – schools, hospitals, and bridges.
“The president said he has put a committee in place to go and
assess the situation and he has also made a commitment that he
will not request money from any G7 country but support to rebuild
the destroyed infrastructure.”
